Penn State (5-4) had an unassisted goal from Sophia Gladieux while her netminder Brie Barraco made eight saves against the potent Orange offense.
How it Happened
- Borzymowski made the first save of the game just 32 seconds into the nonconference showdown. The Orange had the next chance on goal in the ninth minute as Hattie Madden put an effort on goal, thwarted by Barraco.
- Two minutes later, Amber Coebergh had a similar chance and again the Orange were stymied by Barraco, marking a 0-0 score after 15 minutes.
- Ninety seconds into the fresh quarter, Gladieux put a chance wide before a second shot 60 seconds later was turned away by Borzymowski. It was an even game through 30 minutes as Syracuse out-shot Penn State 6-5 in the first half and earned the game's only corner to that point.
- Out of the gates, the Orange flexed their speedy attack as Hattie Madden dribbled down the left side, slotting a pass to the right post of the goal. Van de Pas got the tip of her stick on the ball, sliding it past Barraco for her second goal in as many games and a 1-0 'Cuse lead in the 34th minute.
- After Penn State's first corner of the game came 50 seconds after the van de Pas tally, an effort that was blocked down by a 'Cuse defender, Gladieux leveled the game in the 38th minute.
- Trapping the Nittany Lions in their own zone, Syracuse's offense was relentless with a corner and back-to-back shots on goal from Willemijn Boogert and van de Pas.
- Zigging and zagging through the Penn State midfield unit, de Vries unleashed a hard shot from just inside the circle, scoring what stood up as the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute.
- Penn State returned the pressure early in the fourth quarter with back-to-back corners from Mackenzie Allessie after a Borzymowski save.
- The 'Cuse defense weathered one final push from the Nittany Lions, who took three shots and earned two corners in a 45 second stretch, but only one chance came on goal and Borzymowski was up to the task, sealing the seventh win of her season.
- Syracuse held a 13-12 shot advantage, but was far more efficient in scoring opportunities with 10 of those 13 on goal. The Nittany Lions managed just five shots on goal all game.
- Syracuse had just two penalty corners, while its defensive penalty corner unit held strong and did not allow a Penn State goal on five chances.
- De vries, whose hometown is Malvern, Pennsylvania, scored the 47th goal of her Orange career, pulling even with Lindsey Conrad (2008-10) for second all-time at Syracuse. Only current assistant coach Emma Russell (2012-15) is ahead of de Vries with 57 career tallies.
- Syracuse won its fifth-straight game over Penn State. It was the first regular season meeting between the two programs since the 2007 campaign and the first Orange win outside of the postseason since a 3-2 overtime win on Sept. 22, 2004.
- Sunday's win was the first top-20 win of the season for the Orange and the first under the guidance of Lynn Farquhar, currently in her first year at the helm.
- No. 10 Syracuse returns to ACC action on Friday, Sept. 29, heading for Beantown to clash with No. 11 Boston College.
- Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Eagles' Field Hockey Complex. The game will be carried on ACC Network Extra.
- Syracuse won both meetings last fall against the Eagles, topping Boston College 3-0 at home at the end of September before upending the Eagles 6-2 in the ACC Tournament.
