Sophomore Heidi Knoll tallied a pair of goals in Syracuse's 2-0 victory at Post on Friday afternoon. The Ottawa, Ontario native tallied her first goal in the second period and added the second in the final 20 minutes. Goaltender Allie Kelley recorded her first Syracuse shutout. The Orange (1-0 overall) and the Eagles (0-3) will play the second game of the series on Saturday, Sept. 29th at 1:15 pm at the Sports Center of Connecticut.Â
Â
"I am very happy with our intensity and compete today right from the drop of the puck," said second-year head coach Britni Smith. "This time of year, you expect there to be breakdowns in systems and more mistakes than usual. It is about learning and growing as a team, and I feel we improved each period with our best 20 minutes coming in the third.
Â
"It was great to see Heidi step up and bury two for us tonight. She worked hard during off season and it's so great to see her commitment and efforts rewarded."
Â
Knoll netted her first goal with 3:35 remaining in the second period when she took a puck off a faceoff win by senior Sarah Thompson at the blue line and carried it to the goal. She fired a shot into the top right corner of the net to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Charlotte Hallett and graduate student Rachel Teslak set up Knoll's second goal. Teslak fed Hallett with a pass and then Hallett fired a shot from the blue line that was saved. Knoll tipped in a rebound save to put the Orange ahead, 2-0, with 8:07 left in the game.
