SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After one of the most successful careers in Syracuse University field hockey history, former Orange captain Eefke van den Nieuwenhof has been named as one of the Department's two NCAA Woman of the Year nominees.
Van den Nieuwenhof, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year (2023), joins former Syracuse women's ice hockey forward Rayla Clemons as a Woman of the Year nominee.
A four-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American, just the second-ever in program history, van den Nieuwenhof served as a captain for the nationally-ranked field hockey program in her junior and senior seasons (2022, 2023).
Despite playing as a defender during her four years as a starter, van den Nieuwenhof finished her illustrious career with 89 points, ranking 14th in program history. The four-time NFHCA Mideast All-Region pick led the Orange in scoring last season with 14 goals, half of which came on attacking penalty corners, and four assists for 32 points. Van den Nieuwenhof tallied three game-winning goals in 2023 while converting six of her eight penalty stroke attempts, leading the entire NCAA regardless of division. During her senior season, van den Nieuwenhof backed the Orange to a 1.93 goals against average and a defensive unit that allowed just 4.11 opponent penalty corners per game.
Off the field, the ACC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey, was heavily involved in the team's Team Impact efforts, working closely with Angelina to bring inclusiveness to the greater community.
