CALGARY, Alberta – With the Rivalry Series set to begin in two months, two connections to the Syracuse University women's ice hockey program have been announced to the Canada National Women's Team training camp roster.
A two-time captain for the Orange, DiGirolamo made the camp roster among 16 defensemen while Syracuse head coach Britni Smith continues as an assistant coach after serving as a camp coach last fall in training camp.
The Rivalry Series, a set of five games between the United States and Canada and hosted across North America, begins on Wednesday, Nov. 6 in San Jose, California. Additional cities include Salt Lake City, Utah (Nov. 8), Boise, Idaho (Nov. 10), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (Feb. 6), and concludes in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada (Feb. 8).
DiGirolamo, the 2021-22 CHA Best Defenseman and 2020-21 CHA Defenseman of the Year, will join the team for camp once again after participating in Hockey Canada's Senior National Camp in July 2020. She was also invited to the 2019, 2020, and 2021 Canada BFL National Women's Development Team Selection Camp. In her five seasons with the Orange, DiGirolamo played in 163 games, logging 95 points on 33 goals and 62 assists, including 11 power-play goals. The Mississauga, Ontario native served just 104 total penalty minutes, never sitting for more than 30 PIMs in a single season. DiGirolamo was twice named to the CHA All-Tournament Team after helping the Orange to College Hockey America (CHA) titles in 2018-19 and 2021-22.
Now entering her third season as the head coach for the Syracuse program, Smith has held a number of coaching roles within Hockey Canada since 2014. Smith was an assistant coach for the National Women's U18 Team in 2016 and 2020, helping to guide both teams to an IIHF World Championship silver medal finish, the National Women's Development Team in 2018-19, and the National Women's Development Camp in 2014.
Syracuse ice hockey will host an exhibition at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Sunday, Sept. 22 with a 1 p.m. puck drop against University of Windsor. The Orange officially open the 2024-25 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Minnesota Duluth at 8 p.m. EST.
