Syracuse University women's basketball freshman forward Uche Izoje has been named United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon. Izoje is the first Syracuse player to be named National Freshman of the Week by the USBWA in program history.
The 6-foot-3 forward continues to make her mark on the national stage, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in field goal percentage (.646) and blocks per game (2.9) while ranking fifth in the conference in rebounds per game (8.8).
Izoje is one of just two freshmen in the country averaging over 13.0 points per game while shooting over 64 percent from the field, joined only by Kansas' Jaliya Davis. She is also one of only two players nationally averaging over 13.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game, alongside Kentucky's Clara Strack.
The latest accolade adds to Izoje's growing list of freshman honors this season, which includes four ACC Freshman of the Week awards.
On the national statistical leaderboard, Izoje ranks fifth in total blocks, sixth in blocks per game, seventh in field goal percentage and 24th in offensive rebounds per game (3.8). Her 13.7 points per game leads the 13-2 Syracuse squad that is 3-1 in ACC play heading into a two-game week against Virginia Tech (Thursday, 6 p.m.) and Virginia (Sunday, 2 p.m.).
