Brien Bell announced the addition of Brian Biekert to the men's track and field staff on January 2, 2020.
Biekert comes from Iowa State where he spent the last year as an assistant for the track and field program. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Brown for two seasons. Biekert will coach the middle and distance runners.
Biekert served as an assistant coach at Iowa State University under the direction of Martin Smith during the 2018-2019 season. He helped to assist six cyclones to nine All-American statuses. During the 2018 cross country campaign, the Men’s team finished seventh , while the women finished 15th at the NCAA Championship. This was highlighted by Edwin Kurgat’s third place finish and Annie Frisbie gaining All-American status, finishing 34th in the meet. The success continued indoors as Kurgat finished ninth in the NCAA 5000m and the men finished fifth finish in the distance medley relay. Lastly, at the outdoor national championship, Festus Lagat earned a bronze medal finishing third in the men’s 800-meter run, Kurgat garnered a fifth place finish in the 5000-meter run, and Amanda Vestri finished 14th overall in the women’s 10,000-meter.
In addition to the success at the NCAA level, Biekert assisted both the women and men to Big 12 championships titles in cross country, including two individual titles at the meet by Cailie Logue and Kurgat. At the Indoor and Outdoor Big 12 championship, the men finished second in both meets, only beaten by, eventual NCAA Team Champions, Texas Tech.
Prior to Iowa State, Biekert served as a volunteer assistant at Brown University from 2016 to 2018. In 2018, the men's distance medley relay team qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships and earned All-America honors with a ninth place finish. He also assisted in Zachery Emrich’s two individual Ivy League Championships indoors in the 500-meter.
Biekert's was a member of the 2014-15 Iowa State squad after he graduated from Central Connecticut State. As a Cyclone, Biekert anchored ISU's distance medley relay squad which finished third and earned First Team All-America honors at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships. Biekert qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries during the outdoor season in the 1,500-meter run, clocking a PR 3:44.35 during the season in which he also finished third in the event at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
Biekert graduated from Central Connecticut State in 2014 with a degree in Exercise Science. As a Blue Devil student-athlete, Biekert won three Northeast Conference titles and qualified for the NCAA East Preliminaries in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a time of 8:50.84
