WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore guard Marchele Campbell led the Orangewomen with a career-high 12 points as Syracuse lost to George Washington, 65-43, on Thursday, Dec. 4, in Washington, D.C.
Campbell was the only Orangewoman who scored in double figures. Sophomore forward Tierra Jackson grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Lauren Kohn finished with nine points and senior guard Julie McBride scored seven points.
Cathy Joens led the Colonials, who are receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll, with 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-8 shooting from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds. Anna Montanana posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds along with a game-high five assists and three steals.
McBride, Kohn and Campbell combined for all of SU's 14 first-half points. McBride gave the Orange its only lead of the game, 4-2 with 17:53 left in the first half, after scoring back-to-back baskets. George Washington scored the next 13 points to take a 11-point advantage before McBride scored her final points of the contest on a three-pointer to make the score 15-7 with 7:56 remaining on the clock. With the trey, McBride extended her school-record streak to 34 straight games with at least one three. Triples by Joens and Michaela Leary extended the Colonial's advantage to 15, 22-7, with less than seven minutes left to play. Joens had 13 points at halftime to lead George Washington to a 27-14 lead at the break.
George Washington ran its lead to 21, 35-14, out of the lockerroom before Chineze Nwagbo scored SU's first points of the half with 17:07 on the clock. The Colonials took their largest lead, 45-20, midway through the half. The Orangewomen cut the advantage to 17, 52-35, with 3:18 left in the game, but that was as close as they would get as George Washington closed the game with a 13-8 run. SU made six of its last 10 field goals in the final five minutes of the game.
The Orangewomen next play on Sunday, Dec. 7, when they host Yale in a noon game at Manley Field House.
