PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Julie McBride, junior Chineze Nwagbo and freshman Lauren Kohn combined to score 50 of Syracuse's points as the Orangewomen defeated Providence, 55-50, at Alumni Hall on Saturday, Jan. 17.
McBride moved into second place on SU's career scoring list with 15 points in the game. She has 1,413 markers in her career and is just the third Orangewoman to reach the 1,400-point plateau. McBride added six rebounds and five assists. Nwagbo scored 14 of her career-high 18 points and pulled down eight of her 10 rebounds in the first half. It marked her third double-double in the last four games and the fifth consecutive game she has scored in double figures. Kohn posted 17 points, including connecting on 5-of-7 three-point attempts.
Syracuse improved to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the BIG EAST with the victory. It marked the first time since the 1995-96 season that the Orangewomen won three of their first four league games. SU's victory in Alumni Hall marked its first win in that building since an 82-64 triumph on January 7, 1999.
In the first half, the Orange shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the floor and outrebounded the Friars, 19-10. SU led 9-4 with 14:01 left on the clock, then went on a 17-7 run to take a 26-11 advantage with 5:57 to play en route to their 34-24 halftime lead.
Providence (4-11, 0-4 BIG EAST) came on strong in the second session. SU had established a 47-34 lead with 10:07 left to play when the Friars went on a 12-2 tear to cut the edge to three, 49-46 with 3:47 on the clock. Providence pulled to within three two more times, and needed one trey to tie the score with 25 seconds left and SU clinging to a 53-50 lead, when Kohn went to the foul line and hit both ends of a one-and-one to give Syracuse the five-point win. Providence outrebounded SU 23-11 in the second half, and shot 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from the floor compared to SU's 36.8 percent (7-of-19) shooting.
"Providence played hard," SU head coach Keith Cieplicki said. "I knew sooner or later they would make a run. We showed great courage. This was a great win for us. To be 2-0 in the BIG EAST on the road is great."
Syracuse hosts league foe Notre Dame on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 7:00 p.m. in Manley Field House.
