Orange Off to 4-0 Start With 65-61 Win Against Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore guard Lauren Kohn had a career-high 19 points to lead the Syracuse women's basketball team to a 65-61 victory against Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon in Hamden, Conn. The Orange is 4-0 to start the season for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, and it is the first time the Orange has had an undefeated November since 1997-98. Quinnipiac is 1-3 this season.
Senior forward Chineze Nwagbo's 15 points and 13 rebounds was her second double-double of the season and the 10th of her career. Nwagbo went 5-7 from the foul line to tie a career-high, and her 13 rebounds were a season-high and one off her career-high. Kohn tallied a career-high 19 points, 15 of which came in the second half, and the game-winning three for the Orange. Freshman guard Jessica Richter had a career day with 12 points on a career-high four three-pointers. Freshman Sara Antolick tallied a career-high 13 boards for the Orange, while freshman Amanda Adamson chipped in seven points, going 3-4 from the field in 20 minutes of action.
SU started the game with a 14-8 lead with 13:05 remaining after a jumper by freshman center Vaida Sipaviciute. Freshman guard Jessica Richter hit two of her three three-pointers in the half to open the six-point run for the Orange. Quinnipiac came back with a 10-2 run, and Monique Lee hit two free throws to give the Bobcats an 18-16 lead with 8:16 remaining in the half. The lead then see-sawed back and forth before SU took a 25-22 lead with 5:22 left, but the Bobcats came back on an 8-0 run to take a 30-25 advantage, their largest lead of the half, with 3:36 left to play in the first stanza. The Orange would have three free-throws in the last 40 seconds to trail by only one at the half, 36-35.
Nwagbo had 12 points and Richter made a career-high three three-pointers in the first half. Hannalee Pervan began the contest with 10 points and eight boards, and Quinnipiac' 36 points was the most given up by SU in a half this season.
The two teams traded baskets to open the second stanza. With the score tied at 43, Richter hit her fourth three-pointer of the game to put SU ahead, 46-43, with 15:15 left. On Quinnipiac' next possession, the Bobcats hit a three to again tie the score. The teams would go scoreless for the next 3:21 before Kohn would hit a three-pointer at the 11:01 mark to give Syracuse the 49-46 advantage. The Bobcats came back on a 9-2 run to take the lead, 55-51, with 7:52 to play. Kohn would hit her second three-pointer of the half with 6:20 remaining in the game to put SU on top 57-55.
Quinnipiac took the lead 61-60 with 3:58 left on a basket by Helen Ridley, and SU would hold the Bobcats scoreless for the rest of the game. Kohn would give the Orange the lead on what would be the game-winning three-pointer with 3:46 remaining and secure the win with two free-throws with 7.3 seconds left in the contest. Kohn contributed 10 of Syracuse's last 11 points in the contest.
After being out-rebounded by the Bobcats 22-17 in the first half, SU would hold a 23-18 rebounding edge in the second frame. SU finished 7-20 from the three-point range, a season-best for the Orange.
"We hung in there and made some good plays down the stretch," SU head coach Keith Cieplicki said. "A lot of things didn't go well today, but we ground it out and got a win."
Quinnipiac had three starters in double-digits with Krystal Pressley with 14 points, Nicole Duperron with 10 points and Monique Lee finishing with a double-double on 10 points and 11 boards. Hannalee Pervan came off the bench for the Bobcats, finishing with 12 points and 10 boards.
The Orange returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. to face Binghamton at Manley Field House.
