VILLANOVA, Pa. – Jana Rediger scored 16 points to lead Villanova to a 62-45 victory against Syracuse in BIG EAST women's basketball action on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at the The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. The Orange is now 11-11 overall and 3-8 in the league, while the Wildcats improved to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
Freshman Vaida Sipaviciute led the Orange with 11 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Jessica Richter finished with 10 points. Sipaviciute has scored in double figures in five straight games, while Richter has tallied double digits in three straight. Freshman Mary Joe Riley finished with 10 points.
Rediger scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, including the first 12 of the final stanza. Liad Suez chipped in 11 points for the Wildcats.
SU took an early 6-2 lead on Sipaviciute's only bucket of the first half. The Wildcats hit back-to-back three-pointers to take an 8-6 advantage. Riley hit a three on the Orange's next possession to give the lead back to SU at 9-8 with 13:09 left in the opening half. Villanova netted a basket on its next trip down the court to take a 10-9 lead and the Wildcats did not trail after that. The Orange trailed 16-13 with 8:30 left and Villanova went on a 15-3 run during the next 7:23 to take a 31-16 advantage, its largest lead of the half. Senior Chineze Nwagbo scored the last basket of the half to end a 4:27 SU scoring drought and make the halftime score 31-18. Syracuse committed 10 turnovers in the first half which led to 13 Villanova points.
Villanova opened the second half on a 6-2 spurt to take a 37-20 advantage. SU used an 8-2 run to cut the cushion to 39-28 with 15 minutes left on the second-half clock. The 11-point deficit was as close as the Orange would get. The Wildcats stretched the lead back to 17 at 47-30 with 10:30 left. Riley hit two free throws to bring the Orange within 12, 49-37. Villanova outscored SU 13-6 to take the largest lead of the game, 62-43, with 45 seconds remaining. The Orange hit the game's final basket to make it 62-45. SU was 11-for-24 (45.8%) from the floor in the final 20 minutes.
The Orange finished with 17 turnovers and was outscored 21-6 in points off turnovers. SU finished the game shooting 40%, while the Wildcats shot 43.1%. This was the Orange's ninth-straight loss to Villanova at The Pavilion.
SU returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 12 as the Orange hosts Boston College at Manley Field House at 2 p.m.
