BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – As the regular season winds down, the Orange (7-15-3) is gearing up for a run at the CHA playoffs after winning its fourth-straight game, the longest in program history. Syracuse called upon its entire roster to aid in the Orange's second straight 5-1 victory at Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon.
Even though freshman Janelle Malcolm recorded her second-career game-winning goal at the Wonderland of Ice, it was two other first-year icers in forwards Katelyn Bero and Nicole Feltes who stole the show in the Orange's record-setting fourth-consecutive triumph.
Bero, who had registered only three shots on net all season leading up to Saturday's tilt, celebrated her first-career goal for Syracuse. In conjunction with Bero's landmark tally, Feltes spawned the play for her first career-point on the assist, as well. Feltes had more to offer in the Nutmeg State as she delivered SU's fifth and final goal with only eight ticks on the clock for her first-career goal. Feltes' marker constituted her first-career two-point game.
Sophomore co-captain Stefanie Marty posted her fourth-career two-point showing with her seventh goal and 11th assist of the season to overtake the overall Orange points lead with 18. Marty scored Syracuse's first goal last night and has logged pointstreaks of five, four and three games this season before chalking up another two-game pointstreak.
Freshman forward Megan Skelly took over the powerplay goal lead with her third of the year. Skelly leads all skaters with 10 goals on the season.
Sophomore Cheyenne Bojeski notched her first-career two-game pointstreak with her fifth assist of the season on Saturday. In Friday's 5-1 win, Bojeski secured her second-career game with two-points.
Freshman blueliner Taylor Metcalfe racked up her second assist of the year on Malcolm's game-clincher while freshman center Jessica Frump charted her first-career two-game pointstreak with the second assist on Bero's marker.
Syracuse's defense curbed the Pioneers offense once again, limiting Sacred Heart to 12 total shots all game, matching a defensive-best when the Orange held Niagara to 12 attempts on Jan. 17. On the flipside, Syracuse let off 53 total shots, the most in one game in program history. Junior netminder Lucy Schoedel blocked 11-of-12 Pioneers' attempts, raising her career saves total to 661and lowering her goals against average to 3.02.
Bero broke open the game at 12:15 of the first period in a scrum in front of the net. The Akwesasne, N.Y. native buried her first goal of the season after being setup by Feltes and Frump for the 1-0 lead.
Moving on to the second period, Malcolm jarred her eight goal of the season at the 16:49 mark, second most on the team, on a feed from Metcalfe to increase the Orange's lead twofold, 2-0.
After Lauren Fontaine took a two-minute trip to the sin bin for checking from behind, Syracuse exploited its extra-man advantage and Skelly chalked up her team-best third powerplay marker at 6:31 of the third period. Sophomore co-captain Julie Rising and Marty engineered the play to give the Orange a three-goal pad, 3-0.
Marty made it 4-0 on a dish from Bojeski at 14:51 of the final session before Fontaine put Sacred Heart on the board at 16:35 to bring SU's lead back to three, 4-1.
Feltes managed to add one more tally to the Orange's stat sheet by lighting the lamp at 19:52 of the last period. Feltes was set up by the defensive unit of freshman Kelly Dimmen and junior Gabrielle Beaudry to finalize the count at 5-1 for the second straight outing.
The Syracuse ice hockey team has descended upon its final regular season series of the year when the Orange hosts Division II power, St. Anselm, on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 pm for the final game at Tennity Ice Pavilion. On Saturday, Feb. 21, both teams will move downtown on Senior Day to commence battle at the Onondaga County War Memorial for the final regular season tilt of the year. The following Tuesday, Syracuse goes international for a tune-up exhibition match at McGill University, Canada's No. 1 rated team.
After the next three affairs, Syracuse will make its debut at the 2009 CHA Championship Playoffs in Erie, Pa. The tournament starts on Thursday, March 5.
