SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team (14-8, 3-6) looks to retool against South Florida on Sunday, February 8 at 4pm in the Carrier Dome as part of SU's second annual Daddy Daughter Day. Each daughter that comes to the game with their dads can purchase a $4 general admission ticket, and the first 50 father-daughter duos in the door will receive a free t-shirt!
Dads and daughters will also have the opportunity to take a complementary photo with Otto before the start of the game. An autograph session with the team will follow at the end of the contest.
The game can be seen on ESPNU and SUAthletics.com via Orange All-Access. It can also be heard live on SUAthletics.com via Orange All-Access, WTLA AM 1200 and WJPZ FM 89. Live stats will be available on suathletics.com.
The Orange faced a potent No. 5/10 Louisville squad at Freedom Hall on Tuesday night and was dealt a 78-57 loss, preventing SU's hopes of a two-game road winning streak in the BIG EAST.
Scouting South Florida
USF shares the same league mark (3-6) as the Orange, but has assembled a 16-7 overall record, winning 13 of its first 14 non-conference matchups. The Bulls' lone loss in pre-BIG EAST action was against No. 3/4 California, 85-55. South Florida has defeated St. John's (81-71, OT), Providence (86-62) and Rutgers (59-56).
Senior guard Shantia Grace is the conductor of the nation's third-ranked scoring offense at 81.1 points per outing. Grace is one of three Bulls to have started every contest as she leads USF's scoring efforts with 15.0 points per game. Grace not only directs South Florida with a team-high 94 assists, she is tied for second on the blub with 42 total 3-pointers this season. Junior guard Janae Stokes has netted a team-best 39.2 percent (71-181) from downtown.
Junior forward Porche Grant has procured a club-best 8.4 rebounds per game. Senior guard Jazmine Sepulveda has recorded 68 steals this year while senior center Brittany Denson has stuffed 64 shot attempts, both team-high in their respective categories.
Sunday's victor will earn a slight edge in the overall series as both squads have defeated one another three times. The Bulls ousted Syracuse in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament last year in a narrow overtime win, 68-67, but the Orange subdued the Bulls in the regular season meeting in Tampa, 67-60. For South Florida, Sunday marks its second trip to the Carrier Dome.
Last Year against USF
Erica Morrow knocked down 24 points in SU's overtime setback to USF in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament last year. In overtime, Morrow connected on two jumpers in the paint but South Florida managed to claim a 68-67 lead on two layups by Jessica Lawson and a free throw by Jazmine Sepulveda. After USF missed a free throw with 5.2 seconds left in overtime, Syracuse called timeout to set up a play but could manage only a half-court shot by Chandrea Jones that grazed the back of the rim.
Vionca Murray scored 14 points behind a perfect 8-for-8 shooting from the line. Fantasia Goodwin picked up 13 rebounds, collecting as many rebounds in the first half as the entire South Florida team (11).
In the Orange's regular season triumph, Jones shouldered the scoring effort with 19 points while three others posted double digits. Morrow tallied 15 points, Nicole Michael notched 13 and Goodwin put away 10.
SU held a four point advantage entering the final two minutes and a three-point play by Morrow gave the Orange a 63-56 lead with 1:50 remaining. The Bulls sent Morrow to the line four more times the rest of the way and she converted all four to give the Orange the 67-60 win.
Not Your Average Jo-nes
Senior guard Chandrea Jones recorded her team-best seventh double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 rebounds at No. 5/10 Louisville on Feb. 3. It was her 15 double-double in just 53 career games. The senior added two assists and one steal in her 33 minutes of action.
She has scored in double-figures a team-high 19 times, including the last five (ninth in the BIG EAST), and has led SU in scoring on six occasions. Jones also led SU in rebounding a team-best 11 times, including the last four. She has led the team in steals eight times, blocks on seven occasions and assists three times.
The senior is averaging 16.0 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per contest. She has also added 2.1 steals and 1.5 assists per game. She has 12 15-point plus, six 20-point plus and one 33-point games season. Her seven double-doubles (team best) are fifth in the BIG EAST. Jones also has eight double-figure rebounding performances (team high).
