SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Anghel recorded eight saves in the Syracuse women's soccer squad's 3-0 setback at No. 5/7 Notre Dame on Friday, Oct. 1 in South Bend, Ind. The Orange goes to 5-5-3 overall, 2-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Fighting Irish improves to 10-1, including a 4-0 mark in conference play.
Notre Dame started the scoring in the 26th minute when Elizabeth Tucker scored on an 8-yard shot off a pass from Jessica Schuveiller. The Fighting Irish increased its lead to 2-0 when Melissa Henderson scored from 10 yards out in the 59th minute. Rose Augustin and Julie Scheidler were credited with assists on the play. Henderson recorded the final goal of the game in the 85th minute when she took a pass from Erica Iantorno and put her shot in the back of the goal from 12 yards out for the 3-0 final.
“Notre Dame is a very athletic team and has some very dangerous players,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We gave them space to play in the first half. We made some changes in the second half and played well. We had a couple of breakdowns. I'm proud of our effort against the No. 5 team in the country. It was a learning experience for us. We have to rebound and come back on Sunday against DePaul. If we play like we did for the first 20 minutes of the second half of tonight's game, we'll do very well.”
Notre Dame outshot Syracuse, 27-1, and earned 10 corner kicks. Nikki Weiss made one save for the Fighting Irish.
The Orange is back in action on Sunday at DePaul at 2 p.m.
