SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made six saves and recorded her second consecutive shutout in the Syracuse women's soccer squad's 0-0 tie in double overtime at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 17.
The Orange is now 6-7-5 overall this season, 3-4-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Pirates are 6-9-1, 2-6-1 in conference action. Syracuse is now tied with Providence for fifth place in the BIG EAST American Division standings. The top five teams from the American and National Divisions advance to the BIG EAST Tournament.
“I'm disappointed with the outcome,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We had quality opportunities. You don't get those opportunities very often. They were legitimate goal-scoring opportunities and we just missed them. The defense has been fantastic. We've talked collectively about being more organized. And they were. It's just a shame that we didn't take care of things on the other side of the ball.”
Anghel's shutout is her sixth of the year, which tie her for fourth on Syracuse's single-season record list. That total also ranks sixth on the SU's career leader list. In addition, Anghel now has 86 saves this season, which is the sixth-highest single-season total in school history.
The Orange applied the offensive pressure early, recording a shot on goal in the first 30 seconds of the game. Syracuse recorded four shots in the first half, while Seton Hall produced five shots and earned one corner kick.
The Syracuse defense withstood Seton Hall's attack in the opening minutes of the second half, blocking two shots and successfully defending against a corner kick to keep the game scoreless. The Orange offense came alive in the final six minutes of regulation, as sophomores Tina Romagnuolo and Patricia Lind each had scoring opportunities. Neither could convert as the game went into overtime.
The Orange's offensive onslaught continued as it dominated the extra sessions, outshooting Seton Hall 7-0 in the two overtime periods. Freshman Cecilia Borgstrom created two scoring chances in the first overtime, and sophomore Jenna Rickan's shot with 49 seconds remaining went wide to force a second overtime period. The Orange recorded four shots on goal and earned one corner kick in the final 10 minutes of the game, but it couldn't find the back of the net as the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
Syracuse outshot Seton Hall, 16-13, and recorded five corner kicks to three for the Pirates. Jennifer Pettigrew made seven saves for Seton Hall.
The game was the final regular-season home contest for Syracuse seniors Megan Bellingham and Marjory Elwell. They were honored in a pregame ceremony.
The Orange closes out the regular season on the road next weekend. Syracuse plays at Marquette on Friday and at South Florida on Sunday.
