
Pair of Second-Half Goals Lift Golden Eagles by Orange

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – Syracuse shutout #16 Marquette for the first 45 minutes, but allowed two second-half goals in a 2-0 setback to the Golden Eagles on Friday, Oct. 22 in Milwaukee, Wisc. The Orange is now 6-8-5 overall, 3-5-2 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette improves to 13-3-2, 10-0 in conference action.
The first half was a defensive battle. Marquette recorded three shots, while Syracuse had two. The Orange successfully defended against six corner kicks and SU goalkeeper Brittany Anghel recorded two saves as the teams went into the locker room tied, 0-0, at halftime.
The Golden Eagles broke through in the 64th minute when Ashley Bares played the ball to Maegan Kelly on the run. Kelly's low shot to the far post found the back of the net to give Marquette a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles added an insurance tally in the 81st minute. Rosie Malone-Povolny scored on a header off a free kick by Lauren Thut from 25 yards out for the 2-0 final.
“Marquette is a well-organized, fast physical team that played a very direct style at times, which put us under pressure.,” Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon said. “We had opportunities to score. If we had scored on our opportunity in the first half, it would have been a different game. We still have a chance to make the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday. We will do everything we can to make that happen.”
The Golden Eagles outshot Syracuse, 16-5, while the shots on goal were 6-4 with the advantage to Marquette. MU also earned nine corner kicks to one for the Orange. Anghel and Marquette goalkeeper Natalie Kulla finished with four saves each.
Syracuse plays its regular-season finale on Sunday at South Florida at 1 p.m. The Orange enters the game in a tie with Providence for fifth place in the BIG EAST's American Division standings. The top five teams in each division qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament.
