NEW YORK - Senior guard Erica Morrow was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention at the conference's annual media day for the upcoming 2010-11 season on Thursday, Oct. 21. Morrow was one of 16 student-athletes on the preseason squad, as voted on by the leagues head coaches.
It marks the third-consecutive season where the Orange has placed a student-athlete on the All-BIG EAST preseason team. Forward Nicole Michael earned Preseason All-BIG EAST honors in 2009-10 and Chandrea Jones was named to the preseason squad in 2008-09.
Morrow led Syracuse with 80 steals last season and was second on the team with 11.7 points per game and 118 assists. Entering the 2010-11 season, Morrow ranks among the top 10 in the SU career record books in nine categories, including seventh in points (1,325), sixth in scoring average (13.7), third in three-point field goals made (171) and fourth in steal average (2.2). The Brooklyn, N.Y. native has also started all 97 games in which she has appeared during her collegiate career, which is tied for eighth on the career charts. It is the first conference honor for Morrow since she was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie team in 2007-08.
Morrow joined Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Keisha Hampton (DePaul), Tiffany Hayes (Connecticut), Sarah Miles (West Virginia), Monique Reid (Louisville), Liz Repella (West Virginia), Angel Robinson (Marquette), Sugar Rodgers (Georgetown), Shenneika Smith (St. John's), Da'Shena Stevens (St. John's), Deirdre Naughton (DePaul), Sam Quigley (DePaul) and Khadijah Rushdan (Rutgers) on the preseason squad. Connecticut senior All-American Maya Moore was unanimously selected as the Preseason Player of the Year while teammate Bria Hartley was tabbed Preseason Freshman of the Year.
The Orange earned 120 points, earning a ninth-place ranking in the conference's preseason poll. Connecticut was picked as the favorite to win the conference title with 15 first place votes and 225 total points. West Virginia, Georgetown, Notre Dame and St. John's rounded out the top five.
Syracuse enters the 2010-11 season after a historic season in which it advanced to the Women's National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals, compiling a 25-11 overall record with a 7-9 mark in conference play. The Orange, which won more than one postseason game for the first time last season, concluded its historic campaign with the most wins in a season (25) since it began competing in the NCAA in 1981-82. SU opened the 2009-10 season at 12-0, marking the best start in school history while matching the program's longest win streak.
Fifth-year head coach Quentin Hillsman and his squad opens the season on Nov. 12 when it hosts Northeastern in the Carrier Dome at 9:30 p.m., following the men's basketball game against Northern Iowa.
