SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel received her second consecutive Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award nomination, as announced by USA Hockey on Feb. 17. Schoedel, who was also nominated for the prestigious award in 2009, is one of 45 players being considered. Nominations for the award, which is presented annually to the top player in women's college hockey, were made by NCAA Division I women's ice hockey head coaches.
The NCAA Division I women's ice hockey coaches will also select the top-10 finalists from among the group of 45, with the announcement taking place March 2. A 13-member selection committee will choose the three finalists, which will be announced March 9, as well as the award recipient.
Schoedel, who was Syracuse's first student-athlete to sign with the Orange in its inaugural season, has played in every game in team history. Since transferring from the University of New Hampshire, she has posted a 2.62 goals-against average and .909 save percentage for SU. The senior has recorded six shutouts, including three this season, and helped lead the team to a No. 10 ranking in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls for the first time in program history.
The Ithaca, N.Y. native is one of six nominated players who were also nominated last season, while SU is one of 24 teams represented. She joins six other members of College Hockey America on the Patty Kazmaier list of candidates. Mercyhurst's Vicki Bendus, Bailey Bram, Jesse Scanzano and well as Robert Morris' Brianna Delaney and Sara O'Malley and Niagara's Jenni Bauer round out the CHA contingent of nominees.
The award is named in honor of the late Patty Kazmaier, who was a four-year varsity letter-winner and All-ivy League defenseman for Princeton University from 1981-86. An accomplished athlete who helped lead the Tigers to the Ivy League Championship in three consecutive seasons (1981-84), Patty Kazmaier-Sandt died on Feb. 15, 1990 at the age of 28 following a long struggle with a rare blood disease.
Held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four, the 2010 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award will be presented at a brunch ceremony on March 20 at the University of Minnesota's McNamara Alumni Center at 10 a.m. CDT.
Tickets to the 2010 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award ceremony may be purchased by calling 719-538-1184, or by emailing or faxing a completed ticket form, which can be found at PattyKaz.com. Individual seats are $75, while tables of 10 are available for $700.
