SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior forward Nicole Michael has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for her performances against Pittsburgh and Marquette, as announced by the league on February 8. She averaged 22.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in both games. It is the first time since the 2002-03 season that two Orange women have been named the conference Player of the Week, as junior guard Erica Morrow also earned the accolade earlier this season.
The Queens, N.Y. native registered a game-high 27 points and a team-best 10 rebounds as SU snapped its two-game losing skid with an 87-80 overtime win at Pitt. Michael became SU's all-time leading scorer as she surpassed Julie McBride's scoring mark of 1,605 points when she sank a free throw with 1:37 remaining to pull the Orange within two points, 72-70, of the Panthers. She then sent the game into overtime with a layup with 30 seconds on the clock. The senior led the Orange in scoring for her second consecutive game when she pitched in a game-high 18 points against Marquette on Feb. 6. She added six rebounds and one assist in the 69-60 victory.
Michael is averaging team-best in points (15.0) and rebounds (7.7) in 26.2 minutes per game this season. She will join the rest of the Syracuse University women's basketball team when it travels to Villanova on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS College Sports.
