SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's rowing team defeated Boston University's varsity eight team to capture its fourth Kittell Cup on Saturday morning at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park.
The Orange varsity eight boat had a commanding lead for the duration of the race and crossed the finish line 10 seconds ahead of the Terrier boat, with a time of 6:46.66. The victory snapped a two-year streak for the Terriers winning the Cup, and tied up the all-time series with each school having won four cups apiece.
The Kittell Cup goes to the winner of the annual Syracuse-Boston University varsity eight race. Donated by former SU rower Kristin Bidwell '90, the Kittell Cup is named after former associate director of athletics Janet Kittell for her support of the women's rowing program. Syracuse had previously won the Cup in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Boston's victories came in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009.
The other varsity eight races were split between the schools, with Boston taking the second varsity eight race in 7:03.84 and Syracuse winning the third varsity eight in 7:14.00.
Boston would also take both varsity four races, the first in 7:39.88 and the second in 7:49.75
Syracuse returns to the water April 2nd in Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell, Michigan State, Gonzaga, and Buffalo and will also challenge Yale for the Cayuga Cup.
