ALBANY, N.Y. -- Sophomore Tina Romagnuolo scored her second goal of the game with 50 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Syracuse women's soccer team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Albany on Friday, Sept. 10. The win is the Orange's first road victory of the season and improves Syracuse's record to 2-3-2, while Albany goes to 3-3.
Romagnuolo finished the game with two goals to give her 12 in her career. She is now tied for 10th place on Syracuse's all-time goals scored list with senior Megan Bellingham. Bellingham also scored her 12th career goal against Albany to go along with an assist.
All of the scoring took place in the second half. Albany took a 1-0 lead on Shayla Bergeron's goal on an assist from Jess Baccaglini in the 52nd minute. Romagnuolo tied the score when she found the back of the net with her shot from the top of the box off an assist from Bellingham in the 76th minute. The Great Danes responded 1:16 later when Rebecca Lee scored on a shot from the left side of the box. Bellingham again tied the score at 2-2 in the 81st minute when she placed her free kick from outside the right side of the box to the top left corner of the net.
The game-winner came in the 89th minute. Albany tried to get the ball out of its defensive end, but SU freshman Kayla Afonso took the ball just inside the midfield line and served it back into the box. Afonso's pass went to sophomore Jenna Rickan, who passed the ball to Romanguolo, who collected the ball and put her shot into the left corner of the goal for her second game-winning goal of the season.
“This is a great win for us,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “This was an ugly game. It was a physical game. We didn't play particularly well. All the credit to Albany for scoring the goals they did. They exposed us in the back. We have to be better. But for our players to show the resilience they did and to battle through and score three great goals, I'm very proud of them.”
Syracuse outshot Albany, 16-8, and had eight corner kicks to just one for the Great Danes. Orange goalkeeper Brittany Anghel recorded four saves, while Dani Britt made six saves for Albany.
The Orange returns home on Sunday to host Binghamton at 1 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free of charge.
