SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Cecilia Borgstrom scored an unassisted goal with 1.9 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the Syracuse women's soccer team a 1-0 victory against South Florida on Friday, Oct. 14 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The win improves the Orange's record to 7-5 overall, 6-3 in the BIG EAST, while the Bulls go to 5-7-4, 1-5-3 in league play.
Syracuse turned on the offensive pressure at the end of the second overtime period. Borgstrom and freshman Megan Hunsberger each recorded shots that were saved by USF's Nicole McClure. In the final minute of play, freshman Hanna Strong hit the post before Borgstrom finally broke through with the game winner with a high, arching shot from the right side to the left corner of the net.
“I'm so relieved because we played so hard and we deserved (the win),” Borgstrom said. “I had a shot a few minutes before and I missed it so I was frustrated. I didn't know how much time was left, so when I got the ball I just hit it as hard as I could and hoped for the best.”
Neither team could take advantage of its scoring opportunities during regulation. South Florida recorded six shots in the first half, while the Orange had five. Both teams had four shots in the second half. Strong had the best scoring chance in the 86th minute, but McClure was there for the save to force overtime.
The first overtime session was a defensive battle. Borgstrom recorded the only shot of the first extra session, which was stopped by McClure. Syracuse's defense continued its stellar play in the second overtime, not allowing a USF shot before Borgstrom's heroics in the final minute of play.
“I've only seen one other game end like this one and that was in the World Cup,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “These things happen very rarely. I thought we had a couple of chances before that to score. Cecilia, in particular, had a chance to score. I'm just glad she did. It was a great finish under a lot of pressure.”
Syracuse outshot USF, 15-10, while both team recorded four corner kicks. Orange goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made four saves and recorded her 13th career shutout. She now has seven shutouts this season, which tie her for second on Syracuse's single-season record list. McClure finished with six saves.
The Orange hosts No. 7 Marquette on Sunday at 1 p.m. in its final regular-season home game. A pre-game ceremony will be held prior to the game to honor Syracuse's seniors. Admission is free.
