SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse (7-6-3, 6-4) played evenly with No. 7 Marquette (16-2, 9-1) in its home finalebefore the Golden Eagles broke through to score their first goal in the 47th minute on their way to a 4-0 victory on Sunday, October 16 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Despite the setback, the Orange clinched a bye to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. Syracuse will finish third in the American Division, which is its highest finish since the league went to its current division alignment in 2006.
The first half was evenly played as both teams produced scoring chances. The first was by SU junior Amanda Hamilton, but her header in the fourth minute went high. Junior Tina Romagnuolo also had a chance for the Orange, but Natalie Kulla made a save on her shot in the 25th minute to keep the game scoreless. Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made two saves in the first half, the second coming in the 36th minute as the teams were tied, 0-0, at halftime.
The Golden Eagles put the offensive pressure on early in the second half and scored their first goal in the 47th minute. Ally Miller put a shot on goal from 25 yards out. The ball bounced off the crossbar to Maegan Kelly, who put her shot from the left side into the back of the net to give Marquette a 1-0 lead. Kelly, the leading scorer in the BIG EAST, struck again in the 53rd minute when scored on a shot to the left corner of the goal off assists from Taylor Madigan and Lisa Philbin.
Syracuse continued to work the ball into its offensive end, resulting in scoring chances for senior Casey Ramirez and sophomore Cecilia Borgstrom, but Kulla stopped both shots to keep the Orange off the scoreboard. The Golden Eagles increased their advantage to 3-0 in the 59th minute. Lindsey Page played the ball into the box off a corner kick to Miller, who headed the ball into the net. Britney Scott added a goal in the 76th minute to give Marquette for the 4-0 final.
“We didn't do a good job of marking in the box,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “There was a focus in the first half in particular, as has been the focus all weekend, on marking in the box. We didn't do a good job of that. You have to give credit to Marquette. They are a very good team. Had we taken advantage of our chances that we created, we would have been much better off. We had a couple of great chances in the first half, if one those had scored, the game is different.”
Marquette held a slight advantage in shots and corner kicks, as it had nine shots and four corner kicks to eight shots and three corner kicks for the Orange. Anghel finished with two saves, while Kulla had three.
Sunday's game was the final home game for Syracuse seniors Carly Lenger and Ramirez. Both were honored in a pregame ceremony.
The Orange has one regular-season game remaining against St. John's on Friday, Oct. 21 in Jamaica, N.Y. Syracuse will then take on the No. 2 seed from the National Division in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 30.
