SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Junior Carmen Tyson-Thomas scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Syracuse women's basketball team (3-0) to its second win in two nights as it defeated Lafayette, 74-54, on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Carrier Dome.
“I am just really, really happy about the win,” said Syracuse head coach Quentin Hillsman. “Playing back-to-back nights and playing the style that we play, this was good for us.”
Five players scored in double figures for the Orange. Junior Kayla Alexander recorded her first double-double of the season, her ninth of her career, with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Senior Iasia Hemingway had 11 points off the bench. Elashier Hall was one rebound short of a double-double, recording 10 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Shakeya Leary had 10 points, as well.
Sophomore Danielle Fiacco, freshman Emily Homan, and senior Sarah McGorry all tallied 11 points to lead the visiting Leopards (0-3).
After Lafayette jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, Syracuse recorded four consecutive baskets to take a 10-5 advantage. Tyson-Thomas had four points in that span. The Leopards did not fret and knotted the score at 12-12 with 13:57 remaining in the first half. The Orange responded with a 10-2 run to take a 22-14 lead. Alexander had six points during that time.
Lafayette continued to make it a game, coming back and tying the game at 29-29 with 3:14 left in the period. Leary made two free throws to give SU a 31-29 lead. The Leopards closed out the scoring with a free throw of their own, to make it a 31-30 game at the half.
The Orange came out of the intermission and immediately seized control of the game. SU went on an 18-2 run to open the half and took a 49-33 lead with 13:49 remaining in regulation. The team would retain the lead for the rest of the game.
Hillsman praised the team's play in the second half. “The kids deserve all the credit,” Hillsman said. “They came out in the second half and accepted my challenge. I said to them that we are not doing the things we do, figure it out. Obviously, they figured it out.”
Syracuse is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when the team hosts Buffalo in its final game of its four-game home stand. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
Tickets for Tuesday's game can be purchased online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office or by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX.
