DERBY, Conn. – The Syracuse University women's crew team returns to the water this Saturday with a dual race against defending national champion Yale and instate rival Cornell. Racing on the Housatonic River gets underway at 8 a.m. The Orange will have five crews in action, including the varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight and two varsity fours.
Syracuse opened the spring season at the Kittell Cup, an annual dual meet with Boston University held on the Charles River. The Orange won the third varsity eight race, but lost in the first and second varsity eight races. Syracuse's third varsity eight team beat the Terriers by 12 seconds, crossing the line in 8:23.12. The Boston varsity eight won the Kittell Cup by three second, finishing the course in 7:53.
The Bulldogs, who remained sixth in this week's US Rowing/CRCA national poll, opened the spring season with victories in four of five races last Saturday against Columbia and Penn. Yale's varsity eight had a nearly three-second margin of victory over Penn.
First-year Syracuse head coach Justin Moore is no stranger to the Yale program. He was an assistant heavyweight crew coach for the Bulldogs in the mid 1990s. He guided the Yale freshmen to the 1996 Eastern Sprints title.
Cornell, which will be racing for the first time this spring, is ranked 18th, its highest ranking since being No. 15 in 2000. The Big Red is coming off a solid campaign in 2010, as it finished in fourth-place in the Willing Point Trophy at the Eastern Sprints. Cornell also achieved its first national ranking since May 5, 2004, when the team came in at No. 20 last April. Following the season, head coach Hilary Gheman was named both the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year, and the EAWRC Head Coach of the Year.
