FORT MYERS, Fla. – Syracuse opened the 2011 season with a 1-0 setback to Robert Morris on Friday, August 19 in Fort Myers, Fla. The contest was the first game of the Embassy Suites Kick Off Classic.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half as the Orange outshot the Colonials, 7-2. Robert Morris scored the game's only goal in the 49th minute when it picked off an SU pass in the midfield. When the Colonials passed the ball between Syracuse's two backs, Orange goalkeeper Brittany Anghel came out to play the ball. However, Robert Morris' Ayana Davis got to the ball first and put her shot in the goal for the game-winning score. Syracuse manufactured several scoring chances, but couldn't take advantage of their opportunities as it began the season with a 1-0 loss for the second consecutive year.
“In the first half we played quite well but didn't get a lot of good scoring opportunities,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “In the second half we attacked well. We had great opportunities and their goalkeeper made some great saves. We defended well, allowing just three shots on goal. There were a lot of positives to take from the game. We talk about execution and taking care of the details. We had a lapse in concentration and didn't take care of the details enough tonight. ”
The Orange outshot Robert Morris, 15-3, and earned six corner kicks to three for the Colonials. Anghel recorded two saves, while Jessica Olin made six saves for Robert Morris.
Syracuse will take on Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, August 21 on the final day of the Embassy Suites Kick Off Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
