CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Syracuse extended its unbeaten streak to two games with a 0-0 tie against No. 6/11 Boston College on Thursday, Sept. 1 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Orange goes to 1-1-1 this season, while the Eagles are now 2-0-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Anghel recorded four saves on her way to her second consecutive shutout and the eighth of her career. She now owns sole possession of fifth place on Syracuse's career shutouts leader list.
Boston College came out firing, recording two shots in the first 1:29 of play as Syracuse was finding its rhythm. The second shot by Kristen Mewis went off the post on the Eagles' best scoring chance of the first half. Boston College outshot Syracuse, 3-1 in the first half and both teams recorded three corner kicks.
The Orange created scoring opportunities in the second half as it continued to play solid defense all over the field. Syracuse's play in the midfield was particularly strong, as it neutalized one of the Eagles' strengths. Anghel made three saves in the second half, including one a penalty kick in the 68th minute. Mewis aimed her left-footed shot to Anghel's right side. Anghel made the save to preserve the 0-0 tie.
Syracuse had two shots in the first overtime period, while the Eagles had one in the second extra session.
"We battled hard and executed the game plan," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "The only thing we failed to do was score. In the second half, we found our rhythm and had some great opportunities. We defended well all over the field, which has been a problem for us in the past. We hope to repeat that as we move forward."
Boston College outshot Syracuse, 14-4, and recorded 11 corner kicks to four for the Orange. Eagles' goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni finished with two saves.
The Orange is back in action on Sunday when it takes on Rhode Island in Kingston at 1 p.m.
