FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Junior Tina Romagnuolo and junior Jenna Rickan each scored their first goals of the season to lead Syracuse in its 2-2 tie in double overtime against Central Connecticut on Sunday, September 11. The contest was part of the final day of the Fairfield University 20th Anniversary Invitational in Fairfield, Conn.
The Orange also tied Fairfield, 0-0, on the first day of the tournament on Friday. For their performances in the two games, Romagnuolo, sophomore Rachel Blum and goalkeeper Brittany Anghel were voted to the All-Tournament team.
Central Connecticut (1-2-2) started the scoring in the 34th minute when Christina Boucher collected a loose ball in the box and lifted a shot over Anghel to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. The Orange tied the score two minutes later. Blum took a free kick and played the ball into the box where junior Jenna Rickan dove and headed the ball into the side netting inside the far post. It is Rickan's first goal of the season and the first career assist for Blum.
Syracuse (1-2-3) took its first lead in the 77th minute. Junior Skylar Sabbag played the ball into the box to Romagnuolo, who put her shot over a charging Central Connecticut goalkeeper Nikola Deiter to give the Orange a 2-1 advantage. The goal is the 14th of her career, which moves her into a tie for eighth place on Syracuse's all-time goals scored list with Molly Schmelzle (1998-01). Sabbag recorded her first career assist on the play.
The Blue Devils recorded the equalizer with less than two minutes remaining in regulation when Jewel Robinson's free kick deflected off a Syracuse defender in the wall and went into the net just inside the near post.
The Orange dominated both overtime sessions, but could not record the game-winner. Syracuse's best chance came on a shot by junior Rosina Callisto, which Deiter deflected over the cross bar.
“We dominated every aspect of the game, but Central Connecticut made the most of its two opportunities,” Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon said. “It's not like we're not creating opportunities, we're just not putting the ball into the back of the net. It's frustrating for the players. We've played good soccer for the most part and we hope that continues because in the BIG EAST, you have to take advantage of every chance you get and you can't give up the chances we have.”
Syracuse recorded 25 shots on goal and seven corner kicks, while Central Connecticut had 10 shots and four corner kicks. Anghel finished with three saves, and Deiter had 10 saves for the Blue Devils.
The Orange, which completed its non-conference schedule on Sunday, opens BIG EAST play at Connecticut on Thursday, Sept. 15. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
“Our non-conference schedule has prepared us for everything we're going to see in BIG EAST play,” Wheddon said. “We've played different styles in different conditions. All of our games have been on the road and we'll have some tough conference games on the road this season.”
