SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Tina Romagnuolo returned to the Syracuse women's soccer squad's (2-4-3, 1-2) lineup after missing two games while playing with the Canadian national team and scored her second goal of the season in a 3-1 setback against Georgetown (8-3-0, 2-1) on Friday, Sept. 23 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The goal was the 15th of Romagnuolo's career and moved her into a tie with Natalie Galas (2001-04) for seventh place on the Orange's all-time goals scored list.
Syracuse had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the fifth minute when senior Casey Ramirez crossed the ball from the right side to the left post, where sophomore Cecilia Borgstrom took the pass and had a one-on-one opportunity against Hoyas' goalkeeper Elizabeth Hanna. Hanna stopped Borgstrom's shot to keep Syracuse off the scoreboard.
Georgetown netted the only goal of the first half in the 21st minute. The Hoyas' pass into the box deflected off a Syracuse defender to Camille Trujillo, who put her high shot from the middle of the box in the back of the net. Ingrid Wells assisted on the play that gave the Hoyas a 1-0 halftime lead.
Daphne Corboz added to the Hoyas lead with a goal into the left side of the net from the middle of the box off an assist from Trujillo in the 61st minute. Trujillo then scored her second goal of the game less than a minute later to give Georgetown a 3-0 advantage.
The Orange finally broke through in the 81st minute. Junior Jenna Rickan took a long pass into the box and rifled a shot on goal. Hanna blocked the shot and the rebound went to Romagnuolo, who headed the ball into the net for her second goal of the season.
Syracuse continued to apply the offensive pressure in the final five minutes. Junior Rosina Callisto put her free kick on goal, but Hanna made the save. Romagnuolo had a shot that was also stopped by Hanna, and freshman Hanna Strong's attempt went wide as the Hoyas recorded the 3-1 victory.
Georgetown outshot Syracuse, 11-8, and recorded eight corner kicks to two for the Orange. Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel recorded a season-high five saves, while Hanna finished with three saves for the Hoyas.
The Orange is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 25 when it hosts Villanova at 1 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free of charge.
