SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Megan Hunsberger came off the bench and scored her first career goal in the 56th minute to lead the Syracuse women's soccer team (3-4-3, 2-2) to a 1-0 victory against BIG EAST rival Villanova (4-6-2, 0-4) on Sunday, Sept. 25 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The shutout was goalkeeper Brittany Anghel's fifth shutout of the season and 10th of her career. She is now tied for seventh on Syracuse's single-season shutouts record list and fourth on the career shutouts list. Anghel also recorded a season-high six saves.
The Orange dominated the first half with persistent offensive pressure. Syracuse tallied four shots during the first period, as well as five corner kicks. SU dominated on the defensive end as well, not allowing a Wildcat shot until the 30th minute. Neither squad could take advantage of its scoring opportunities as the teams were tied, 0-0, at halftime.
Syracuse continued to apply pressure on the Villanova defense at the start of the second half. Juniors Brielle Heitman and Tina Romagnuolo each recorded shots in the first seven minutes before Hunsberger finally broke through in the 56th minute. She gathered the ball just past midfield and possessed it while fighting off a defender down the left flank. She entered the box and lifted the ball by Villanova goalkeeper Jami Kranich into the right side netting for the game-winning goal. Anghel made two saves in the final 18 minutes to secure SU's third one-goal victory of the season.
The Orange outshot Villanova, 10-6, and had five corner kicks to the Wildcats' one. Kranich finished with five saves for Villanova.
Syracuse returns to the field on Friday, September 30 at Seton Hall to start a four-game road stint. The Orange and Pirates will face off at 7 p.m.
