Syracuse ice hockey head coach Paul Flanagan announced Thursday that Alison Domenico will join the Orange coaching staff as an assistant beginning with the 2011-12 season. Domenico comes to SU from Ohio State University, where she was an assistant coach with the Buckeyes last season.
"We are very excited to have Alison join our program," Flanagan said. "She brings an exceptional work ethic and strong athletic background to our campus."
Domenico will assist Flanagan and associate coach Graham Thomas in all aspects of the ice hockey program as it prepares to compete against the nation's elite in its fourth season.
"It's such an honor to become part of such a prestigious university that excels both academically and athletically," Domenico said. "It is extremely exciting to have the opportunity to work with Paul and Graham to help continue the success of this young and already established program, both on the ice and in the classroom."
During her time Columbus, Domenico provided on and off-ice instruction with the Buckeye women's ice hockey team as well as video analysis and day-to-day hockey operations. Her responsibilities also included budget management for recruiting trips, prospective student-athlete visits, home meals and team banquets.
"In her short coaching tenure, Ali has worked for two very good mentors in Brendon Knight at Hamilton and most recently Jackie Barto at Ohio State," Flanagan said. "We feel her coaching experience, coupled with her background as a standout performer at St. Lawrence, will give our athletes an opportunity to learn from this young, dynamic coach."
Domenico received her bachelor's degree from St. Lawrence University in 2009, where she played four seasons for the Saints. She played in 153 career games, the sixth-most in St. Lawrence history, and is tied for first on the Saints all-time records list for career power play goals (29). During her career, she played in four ECAC Tournaments and four NCAA Tournaments, reaching the Frozen Four in 2006 and 2007.
As the captain during her senior season, Domenico played in all 38 games, scoring 16 goals and adding 21 assists. She was named the ECAC Defensive Forward of the Year as well as earning ECAC Second Team All-League honors.
The Orange open the 2011-12 season in Minneapolis, Minn. with the East/West Showcase against St. Cloud State on September 30 at 4 p.m. at Ridder Arena. SU returns to Tennity Ice Pavilion of its home-opener on October 14 against Clarkson at 7 p.m.
