Box Score
NIAGARA, N.Y. – Syracuse (9-21-3, 0-8-3) allowed a power play goal just 1:37 into overtime in a 3-2 setback at Niagara (10-14-8, 3-5-3) on Friday, Feb. 24. Sophomore goalkeeper Kallie Billadeau (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded 31 saves for the Orange.
With the loss, Syracuse will finish the regular season in fourth place in the CHA standings with one league game still to play, and will face No. 5 Mercyhurst in the first round of the CHA Tournament next weekend.
Niagara held a 34-17 advantage in shots and was 2-for-6 on the power play, while Syracuse was 0-for-4 on the man advantage.
The Orange never led in the game as Niagara took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a power play goal by Kaleigh Chippy. Syracuse answered less than two minutes later when junior Holly Carrie-Mattimoe recorded her team-leading 14th goal of the season on assists from sophomore Margot Scharfe and freshman Kaillie Goodnough.
The Purple Eagles regained the lead in the second period when Erica Owczarczak found the back of the net, but once again the Orange would answer. Scharfe scored a shorthanded goal on an assist from Carrie-Mattimoe with less than four minutes to play in the period.
Syracuse had a power play opportunity at the end of the second period and the beginning of the third, but couldn't take advantage of the extra skater. Niagara outshot the Orange, 12-4, in the third period, but Biladeau turned away each scoring attempt to keep the score tied and force overtime. Syracuse was called for a hooking penalty 1:25 into overtime, and Owczarczak recorded her second goal of the contest for the game winner.
The Orange and Niagara meet again on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. in the last regular-season game for both teams.
