UPS Team Performance Index
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â The rv/23 Syracuse women's basketball team (15-2, 3-1 BIG EAST), tied for its best record after 17 games in program history, is ranked No. 11 in the UPS Team Performance Index, a new data-driven index created by STATS, LLC.
Â
The index measures efficiency and teamwork to highlight teams that are well-balanced across all aspects of basketball. In creating the UPS Team Performance Index, STATS, the world's leading sports technology, data and content company, reviewed 10 years of past men's and women's college basketball statistical data, finding a strong correlation to overall performance in all aspects of the game and winning.
Â
The Orange's index score of 126.88 thus far places it No. 11 out of 340 Division I women's basketball teams. That score is third in the BIG EAST, behind No. 1 Connecticut (143.02) and No. 4 Notre Dame (133.00), and just ahead of No. 12 Louisville (126.27).
Â
In the traditional polls, Syracuse ranked No. 23 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll released last Tuesday, while just missing the top 25 in the Associated Press poll, released last Monday, coming in as the first "others receiving votes" team.
Â
In other computer-generated rankings, Syracuse is No. 21 in the Jeff Sagarin/CBN Women's College Basketball Ratings. The Orange is No. 44 on RealTimeRPI.com and No. 25 in its power ratings.
Â
The UPS Team Performance Index will comprehensively measure offensive and defensive efficiency for all 345 NCAA Division I men's and 340 NCAA Division I women's basketball teams. The Index will be updated on an ongoing basis and available at http://hosted.stats.com/cbk/tpi.asp for men's basketball and http://hosted.stats.com/wcbk/tpi.asp for women's basketball with the leaders being announced each week beginning today and continuing through conference tournament play.
Â
The UPS Team Performance Index for college basketball will include six key statistical components with a proven correlation to a team's overall success. These statistical components then are combined in a manner that rewards teams for performing efficiently and effectively in all categories to create the Index, ranking them from highest to lowest.
Â
The Orange continues its three-game road swing on Wednesday when it plays at St. John's in an 11:30 a.m. tip-off at Carnesecca Arena. The game will be webcast live at ESPN3.com.
