espnW Team of the Week | espnW Player of the Week
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - After a 3-0 performance in the Virgin Islands resulting in the Paradise Jam Reef Division title, Syracuse women's basketball (8-0) got some national attention on Monday as espnW named the Orange its Team of the Week and guard Brianna Butler its Player of the Week.
The Orange posted convincing double-digit wins over Texas (77-65), Memphis (77-58) and No. 12/11 Texas A&M (78-63) to win the title in St. Thomas, while Butler was named the Reef Division MVP.
The sophomore led Syracuse in scoring all three games, posting 18 vs. Texas, matching her previous career-high with 23 against Memphis, and then shattering that with 29 in the upset over Texas A&M. She averaged 23.3 points, shot 57.5 percent overall, including a stellar 14-of-26 (53.8 percent) from 3-point range.
espnW's national player of the week award is selected by Charlie Creme, Graham Hays, Michelle Smith and Mechelle Voepel. It's team of the week is announced in Hays' "Weekend Wrap" blog.
It was the second-straight undefeated Caribbean Thanksgiving trip for the Orange against BCS opponents. SU went 2-0 at the San Juan Shootout with wins against Virginia and Georgia Tech in 2012.
Head coach Quentin Hillsman's Orange is now 8-0 on the season for the fifth time in program history and the third time in the last five years.
Saturday's win over the Aggies, who were ranked No. 12 by the AP and No. 11 by the coaches, was the highest ranked opponent Syracuse has beaten since knocking off No. 6/6 Ohio State, 75-66, at the Carrier Dome on Dec. 11, 2010.
