COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -Â Syracuse women's basketball's Brittney Sykes is one of 34 of the nation's top players that will participate in the 2013 USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team Trials, USA Basketball announced on Tuesday. The rising sophomore guard will vie for one of 12 spots on the USA squad on May 16-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.

It will be Sykes' second summer in a row playing with USA Basketball. Last summer, she attended trials at the USOTC and was named to the U18 National Team. She is one of 23 players that have previously attended USA Basketball trials.
Â
The 5-9 dynamic guard is coming off a terrific freshman season for the Orange in which she averaged 8.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game on her way to being named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. She scored in double figures 14 times, including a season-high 20 vs. Boise State on Dec. 30 and 16 in key victory at home vs. No. 13 and eventual national finalist Louisville in the regular season finale on March 4.

Â
Sykes drew national acclaim on Jan. 23 with her steal and 50-foot buzzer-beater that defeated St. John's, 60-57. The amazing shot was No. 1 Play of the Day on ESPN SportsCenter and won Shot of the Year at the 'Cuse Awards.
Â
The USA squad, which is on a quest to capture a fifth-consecutive gold medal at the U19 Worlds, will compete in the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, hosted by Lithuania from July 18-28 in Klaipeda and Panevežys. The team will regroup for training on July 1 at the USOTC prior to traveling to Europe for the competition.
Â
