Orange grind out 90-84 win over Duquesne
Behind a 22-point, 19-rebound effort from Briana Day, the Orange earned its second victory of the season, grinding out a 90-84 win at Duquesne after trailing by as much as 14 in the first half.
Day's performance was one for the Syracuse record books. The sophomore center became the 10th player in program history to record at least 19 rebounds in a single game. It marked the most rebounds recorded by an individual in a game since Shakeya Leary pulled down 19 boards against Seton Hall on Jan. 8, 2011.Â
Â
The Orange also got a career-high 22 points from Diamond Henderson, who went 3-of-3 from behind the arc.
Â
The Dukes came out hot, opening up a 14-point lead with 10 minutes to play in the first half, doing so by sinking six triples early on.
Â
Syracuse chipped away at the lead with the help of Henderson, who scored 10 points in the final eight minutes of the first half, including a jumper with one second remaining that gave the Orange its first lead of the game.
Â
The teams traded baskets for much of the second half, with neither team taking more than a two-possession lead until the Orange went up by seven with less than eight minutes to play in the game on a Briana Day layup.
Â
The Dukes would never cut the Orange lead back to one possession after that.
Â
In addition to Briana Day and Henderson, the Orange also got double-digit outputs from Alexis Peterson and Cornelia Fondren, who scored 15 and 12 respectively. Taylor Ford chipped in nine and Brianna Butler added seven.
Â
Both teams grabbed 44 rebounds in the game, but it was 'Cuse's 20 offensive rebounds that led to 21 second chance points that propelled the Orange to the win.
Â
The Orange will return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when the team takes on Jacksonville.
