Former Orange Stefanie Marty and the Swiss win bronze in women's ice hockey.
SOCHI, Russia—Former Orange Stefanie Marty won the bronze medal game against Sweden earlier today, marking the first time Switzerland has medaled in women's hockey and the first time a Syracuse alum has won a medal in the winter Olympics.
Â
Marty has been a member of every Swiss women's hockey team that has qualified for the winter games, beginning in 2006. This was the first time that the Swiss reached the bronze medal game, taking fifth place in Vancouver in 2010, its previous best finish. This is also the first ice hockey medal for Switzerland since World War II.
Â
The Swiss went into the final stanza with a 2-0 deficit but the team would not squander its first opportunity to medal and had a four-goal third period to come out on top, 4-3.
Â
Though Marty did not contribute a point to the win, she did score the game-winner in the quarterfinal matchup with Russia to advance to the semifinal round. In total, Marty contributed two goals throughout the games.
