SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Sophomore Kayla Treanor notched her sixth hat trick of the season in a 12-10 setback against No. 3/2 Maryland (8-0, 2-0 ACC), the first of the season for the No. 2/3 Syracuse women's lacrosse team (6-1, 2-1 ACC), on Monday night in the Carrier Dome. Treanor totaled four points on the night, adding an assist to her tally.

Junior Kailah Kempney became Syracuse's all-time draw control leader after winning two against the Terps, giving her a career total of 182 wins in the circle. Classmate Alyssa Murray gained exclusive control of the third-best point total in program history after notching two goals including the first of the game, bringing her career total to 283.

"Maryland is a confident team with great talent and they stepped up and made plays," head coach Gary Gait said. "Two areas that I thought hurt us today were draw controls, in a one- or two-goal game you have to have the ball, and our shooting percentage. I thought we had some great looks at the cage and if we shot a bit better, one or two goals make a big difference in a game like this."

Maryland bested Syracuse 15-9 on draw controls including an 8-4 showing in the second half, and monopolized the ball for much of the game. Syracuse shot 40 percent, down from its 52 percent average on the season, while the Terps scored on half of its attempts. The UMD defense frustrated a normally prolific Orange offense, which averages over 17 goals per contest.

In all other areas, however, the two teams were evenly matched. Maryland had one fewer turnover and one more ground ball than Syracuse but the Orange edged the Terps in clears, 9-8 and shots, 25-24. Both teams capitalized on two free position opportunities though Maryland was awarded two more than SU.

Junior Kelsey Richardson had a solid performance in the cage, stopping seven shots to tie her season-best performance.

Syracuse and Maryland opened the game with back-and-forth play as the first 18 minutes saw three ties and four lead changes. The Terps scored three consecutive goals in 3:22 to take a two-point lead that would undo the Orange for the rest of the game. 'Cuse kept it close to close out the half with goals from junior Gabby Jaquith and Kempney, ending the first period behind one goal, 6-5.

Maryland regained its two-goal advantage just 17 seconds into the second stanza off a breakaway shot from the opening draw. The teams exchanged a set of goals but UMD was quick to insure its lead before Treanor notched her second goal of the day on a free position shot with 22:06 left, bringing SU within one point. The Terps saw its largest lead of the day less than two minutes later, however, taking a 10-7 advantage that would ultimately be too much for Syracuse to overcome. Maryland held no less than a two-goal lead for the remainder of the game.

The Orange stays home to face No. 4/5 Florida on Saturday, March 15 at noon in the Carrier Dome.
