SYRACUSE, N.Y. - As Syracuse women's basketball prepares for the upcoming NCAA Tournament, its two NLI signings for the 2014-15 campaign, 5-8 guard Danielle Minott (Miami, Fla.) and 6-4 forward Amber Witherspoon (Chicago, Ill.), have wrapped up their tremendously successful high school careers.
Â
Danielle Minott
Miami Country Day senior guard, Danielle Minott, led her team to a 26-3 record and state title, averaging 18.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, four steals and 2.5 assists per game. She shot 50 percent from the field including 35 percent from the 3-point line.
Â
The Miami Country Day Lady Spartans defeated Seffner Christian Academy, 65-51, to bring home the school's first 3A FHSAA girls state championship in its 75-year history. In her final outing, the 5-8 Minott tallied six points and eight rebounds.
Â
This title came after Minott's 22-point, 12-rebound performance in the region 4-3A semifinal victory against Weston Sagemont. Miami Country Day defeated the Lions, 64-35. The Lady Spartans, coached by Ochiel Swaby, also beat Melbourne Florida Air Academy in the regional final game, 68-41.
Â
In 2011, Minott led Parkway Academy to the state title game. In 2012 she transferred to Country Day where she averaged 19 points and eight rebounds as a junior. During that season she also took a run at the state title game.
Â
ESPN ranks Minott as a three-star recruit with a scout grade of 90. She is listed as the No. 18 guard.
Â
Amber Witherspoon
Amber Witherspon, a 6-4 post player for Lincoln Park High School in Chicago, Ill., averaged 18.4 points, 16.4 rebounds and eight blocks per game as a senior.
Â
ESPN ranks Witherspoon as a three-star recruit with a scout grade of 90. She is ranked 16th among post players. On her career, Witherspoon recorded 16.5 points, 14.6 rebounds and eight blocks per game.
Â
Witherspoon was honored as an all-conference player as a sophomore and a senior. She was also an All-Chicago public league team member as a senior. Most notably, Witherspoon was a two-time Lincoln Park MVP Award winner.
Â
The pair will join the Orange and look for immediate playing time to make up for the loss of seniors Rachel Coffey, Phylesha Bullard and La'Shay Taft in the backcourt and Shakeya Leary in the post.
Â
The 22-9 Orange will learn their NCAA destination and foe on Monday at 7 p.m. when the NCAA Women's Basketball Selection Show airs on ESPN.
