SYRACUSE, N.Y.- After giving up an early goal in the 13th minute, the Syracuse women's soccer team battled Louisville to the final whistle in ACC play on Sunday afternoon. Despite dominating the second half of play, the Orange was held scoreless, losing to the Cardinals by a final score of 1-0 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Syracuse (4-8-1, 0-4 ACC) outshot the Cardinals 7-6 in the contest, including a 5-3 edge in the second half. Louisville (6-5-1, 2-2 ACC) utilized a goal from Isabella Habuda in the 13th minute to come away with the win.
"It was a tough game for us. I don't think we executed very well in the first half," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We gave the ball away far too much, but then we turned it around in the second half. The statistics show that we were more dominant in the game, but the only result that counts is 1-0."
The Orange had eight corner kicks in the match compared to only one from the Cardinals. Both sides had five shots on target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan gave up the only goal in the game as Habuda collected a through ball inside the box, finishing for the score to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Brosnan made four saves in net, but it was not enough.
Syracuse had multiple scoring opportunities in the second half, but Taylor Bucklin's five saves for Louisville secured the clean sheet. Sophomore Alex Lamontagne led the Orange with two shots on goal. Classmate Jessica Vigna nearly had the equalizer in the 90th minute on a header towards the net, but a Louisville defender came up big inside the box to block it away.
Sophomore Alana O'Neill and the Orange defense were solid all afternoon. O'Neill made multiple tackles on the backline to prevent the Cardinals more scoring chances.
The Orange will travel to take on No. 14 Notre Dame on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. for its next contest. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
