Kayla Treanor now ranks sixth on Syracuse's all-time scoring list.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Kayla Treanor recorded five goals and moved up to sixth place on the school's all-time scoring list in the No. 3/2 Syracuse women's lacrosse team's 12-11 victory against Connecticut in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The Orange improves to 5-0 this season, while the Huskies go to 1-2.
Â
"That was a good team that played hard," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait of the Huskies. "(This game) gives us an opportunity to take a step back and refocus. I haven't seen that many unforced errors and turnovers in a home game in a long, long time. I think it's mental focus and preparation so we'll work on that."
Â
With the score tied 4-4, senior Gabby Jaquith scored on an assist from junior Halle Majorana at the 13:11 mark to spark Syracuse on a 6-1 scoring run to end the half. Majorana and Treanor scored unassisted goals before Connecticut's Carly Palmucci briefly halted the run with one of her two goals. Senior Kailah Kempney scored off an assist from Majorana and sophomore Taylor Poplawski found the back of the net on a free position attempt to extend the offensive outburst. Treanor tallied the final goal of the half on an assist from senior Loren Ziegler with one second on the clock to give the Orange a 9-5 lead at intermission.
Â
The squads traded goals to start the second half before Connecticut tallied three unanswered goals to get within one at 10-9 with 10:46 remaining. Treanor ended Syracuse's scoring drought of nearly nine minutes when she found the back of the net off a pass from Majorana to again put the Orange up by two.
Â
The Huskies won the ensuing draw, but junior Brenna Rainone caused a turnover to give possession back to Syracuse. However, the Orange turned it over in its defensive end on the clear and Katherine Finkelston took advantage, finding the back of the net at the 8:28 mark to get Connecticut back within one.
Â
Treanor was awarded a free position when she was fouled after picking up a ground ball off a shot by junior Lisa Rogers. She converted on the attempt for her fifth goal of the game which extended Syracuse's advantage to 12-10 with 6:07 on the clock. The score remained that way until the 1:17 mark when Emily Anderson found the back of the net to cut the Orange's lead to 12-11. Kempney was awarded the ensuing draw, her 13th of the game, and Syracuse ran out the clock for its second consecutive one-goal victory.
Â
With her five goals, Treanor climbed to sixth place on Syracuse's career scoring list with 237 points. In addition, she increased her career goals scored total to 171, which put her in a tie for fifth place on the all-time goals scored list with Leigh-Ann Zimmer (2001-04).
Â
Syracuse outshot Connecticut, 30-20, and again dominated in the draw circle, winning 19-of-24. The Huskies picked up 23 ground balls to 22 for the Orange. Syracuse goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson recorded five saves, while Connecticut's Shannon Nee finished with nine saves.
Â
The Orange returns to ACC play on Saturday, Feb. 28 when it hosts No. 7/6 Boston College at noon in the Carrier Dome.Â
