SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 5/5 Syracuse scored twice in the first minute and never looked back as it defeated --/rv Cornell, 14-8, in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, March 17. The win was the third straight for the Orange, which improved its record to 8-2.
Â
Junior Halle Majorana led Syracuse with five points on three goals and two assists, while junior Kayla Treanor had four points on two goals and two assists. With her performance, Treanor climbed to fifth place on the Orange's all-time scoring list with 248 points, surpassing Halley Quillinan (2007-10).
Â
Senior Kailah Kempney started the scoring when she found the back of the net on an assist from Treanor just 18 seconds into the contest. Junior Taylor Gait followed with another goal 23 seconds later as the Orange jumped out to a 9-1 lead with 7:42 remaining in the first half. Treanor had all of her points prior to intermission, while Majorana had two goals and an assist to help the Orange to a 9-3 halftime lead.
Â
Syracuse's offense continued to click at the start of the second half as junior Erica Bodt, senior Loren Ziegler and Kempney all registered goals to give Syracuse its largest lead at 12-3 with 24:26 remaining. Catherine Ellis netted back-to-back goals to spark Cornell (5-2) on a 4-0 scoring run that cut the deficit to 12-7, but that was as close as the Big Red would get. Sophomore Erin Francis  and senior Gabby Jaquith both scored to extend Syracuse's advantage to 14-7. Amie Dickson posted the final goal of the game with one second remaining for the 14-8 final. Dickson led Cornell with five points.
Â
"I thought we got off to a great start," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "We had a bit of a mental lapse a little bit in the first half and again in the second half. But I think the start of both halves was very good. We were focused at the start of the game and coming out after halftime. We played well at times, did some very good things, and then continued to make some mistakes. That's going to happen when you play 31 players and you give everyone a shot. It's hard when you stand on the sidelines a bit and you get in and you make some errors that we'd like to have back. We'll go back to practice and sharpen the skills a little bit more and make sure we're ready."
Â
Syracuse outshot Cornell, 33-19, and picked up 24 ground balls to 16 for the Big Red. Syracuse again dominated in the draw circle, winning 16-of-23. Kempney led the way with seven draw controls. Senior Kelsey Richardson made seven saves for the Orange, while Renee Poullott had 11 for Cornell. Syracuse's defense forced 20 turnovers and was particularly effective on the Big Red's clears as it converted just 15 of 22 attempts.

The Orange goes back on the road this weekend to face No. 7/6 Northwestern on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m.
