Treanor Leads Orange Past Louisville

Kayla Treanor leads the Syracuse offense with seven points against the Cardinals.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior Kayla Treanor recorded seven points to lead No. 9/9 Syracuse to a 16-8 victory against No. 14/14 Louisville on Thursday, April 16. The Orange improves its record to 10-6 overall and finishes the ACC regular season with a 3-4 record.

"It was a good team win," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "We had a good start to the game, which is something we've been working on, and we didn't let them back into the game. I'm happy with the effort."

Junior Halle Majorana started the scoring 53 seconds into the contest on an assist from Treanor. After the Cardinals tied the score, Treanor scored the first of three straight goals for the Orange as it took a 4-1 lead with 15:16 on the clock. Senior Gabby Jaquith followed Treanor's tally with a free position goal and junior Taylor Gait also found the back of the net.

Louisville responded with three goals of its own to tie the score at 4-4 with 7:55 remaining in the half. Senior Kailah Kempney broke the tie at the 5:18 mark, before the Orange scored on a fastbreak that was started with a caused turnover by freshman Kathy Rudkin. Senior Mallory Vehar picked up the ground ball and started the break, which ended with a goal by Treanor on an assist from freshman Riley Donahue. Kempney extended Syracuse's scoring run, finding the back of the net on an assist from Donahue with 12.8 seconds on the clock to push the Orange's lead to 7-4. SU goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson made two saves in the final seconds to preserve Syracuse's three-goal lead at intermission.

The Orange continued its scoring run in the second half as Majorana, Treanor, senior Loren Ziegler and Donahue each found the back of the net to give Syracuse a 10-4 advantage with 23:24 remaining. Cortney Daley ended Louisville's scoring drought of more than 14 minutes with a free position goal, but the Orange responded with goals from Ziegler, Gait and senior Devon Collins to take its largest lead of the game at 14-5 with 16:17 on the clock.

With Syracuse leading 14-7, Treanor recorded back-to-back goals on assists from Majorana and sophomore Tori Wehner as the Orange went on to the 16-8 victory.

Treanor led the Syracuse offense with five goals, while Majorana had five points on two goals and three assists. Donahue added four points on a goal and three assists. Daley led the Cardinals with three goals.

The Orange outshot Louisville, 38-24, and picked up 23 ground balls to 17 for the Cardinals. SU dominated on the draw, winning 18-of-26. Kempeny finished with nine, while sophomore Kaeli O'Connor had five. Syracuse limited Louisville's Kaylin Morissette, who ranks second in the naton in draw controls averaging nearly 12 a game, to just five. Richardson made 11 saves, reaching double figures in saves for the second straight game and the fifth time this season.

Syracuse will host Albany on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m. in its final regular-season home game. The Orange's senior class will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
