Piacentini Earns MVP
The Syracuse hockey team, which reached its fourth CHA title game in seven seasons this year, announced its team awards this week, which were voted on by the student-athletes.
Junior Melissa Piacentini earned MVP and Best Offensive Player honors after tying for the team lead with 29 points. The South Weymouth, Mass. native led the nation in power play goals with 12 this year.
With another year with the Orange to come, Piacentini is already the program's all-time leading goal scorer with 44. She earned All-CHA First Team honors this year after earning second team accolades last year. Piacentini also won the 'Cuse Award as the team's MVP for the second-straight season at the ninth-annual 'Cuse Awards in April.
Best Defensive Player honors went to fifth-year senior and team captain Akane Hosoyamada. The Banff, Alberta native earned All-CHA Second Team honors this season. It was the third time she earned All-CHA honors after making the rookie team as a freshman and earning first team honors in 2012-13 as well as being named the league's best defenseman.
The CHA Rookie of the Year Stephanie Grossi also was dubbed the top-rookie by her teammates. Grossi led the Orange with 21 assists – a total that tied for second amongst freshman nationally.
In addition, a pair of 'Cuse players were tabbed as co-Most Improved.
Senior Amanda Cariddi earned the accolade in her first-full season with the team after joining 'Cuse after a previous stint with the club team.
Cariddi played in a pair of games, including her first career start in the regular-season finale at RIT, in which she allowed just one goal which came on the power play.
Laurence Porlier is the other Most Improved recipient. She netted her first-career goal in a 3-1 win over Robert Morris on Feb. 7 and chipped in a pair of assists on the season as well.
Syracuse had a league-best six student-athletes represented on All-CHA teams in addition to Paul Flanagan earning CHA Coach of the Year, while much of that production will return for next season.
The Orange will return 87-percent of its point production from this year for the 2015-16 season, as well as a pair of goaltenders who combined to log 97-percent of the team's minutes in net.
