SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's soccer team will travel to take on #25 Connecticut on Thursday night, as the Orange and Huskies renew their former BIG EAST rivalry at 5 p.m.
Syracuse (2-2) is coming off a come-from-behind win at home against Albany on Sunday, as junior Stephanie Skilton scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute. Connecticut (3-0) remains unbeaten, outscoring its opponents by a total of 10-4 thus far this season.
"We have a lot of lessons to learn from our game against Albany in preparation of UConn," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "They are a fast, explosive, dynamic team and we have a lot of history."
Once battling against each other in the BIG EAST, the Huskies have dominated the matchup, garnering an overall record of 1-18-1 against the Orange. Both these teams played against each other last season, ending the contest in a 1-1 tie after an equalizer from Alexis Koval in the first half.
The lone win from the Orange was in 2012, which was a team that included current senior Erin Simon.
"I think we just need to come out with some intensity and pride to want to want to win the game," said Simon. "We have to come out just wanting to beat them. It's going to be a battle, it's going to be a rivalry. We've been in the BIG EAST with them."
Since the Orange have moved over to the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Huskies have also left the BIG EAST, joining the American Athletic Conference.
For Syracuse, Koval has started off the season with exceptional play, leading the team with two goals and three assists for seven total points. Skilton will also look to build off last game, where she tallied her second goal of the season, placing her in the top five in Syracuse women's soccer history with 19 career goals.
The Huskies are led offensively by Rachel Hill, who leads the team with four goals and nine points. UConn has outshot its opponents 71-36 in three games, proving its dominance on the offensive end. Huskies' goalkeeper Emily Armstrong is 3-0 with a .789 save percentage and 1.33 goals against average.
