BLACKSBURG, Va.- Junior Stephanie Skilton scored the lone goal for the Syracuse women's soccer team against No. 10 Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon, but it was not enough as the Orange lost to the Hokies by a final score of 3-1.
Syracuse (4-7-1, 0-3 ACC) lost its third consecutive ACC contest after starting conference play against three top-10 clubs that included today's loss against No. 10 Virginia Tech (10-1-1, 2-1 ACC). The Orange battled with the Hokies for majority of the contest, but defensive miscues led to the VT goals.
"I am disappointed to come away with the loss when we were well prepared," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We gave away two poor goals on set pieces in the first half that led to us chasing the game. We have to eliminate our mistakes to compete at the highest level."
Virginia Tech outshot Syracuse 15-8 in the contest, including a 7-3 total of shots on goal. Skilton scored the only goal in the contest for the Orange, coming in the 44th minute to send Syracuse into the half trailing 2-1.
Sophomore Courtney Brosnan made four saves in net for the Orange while conceding all three goals. Virginia Tech goalkeeper Kaylyn Smith made two saves to come away with the win.
The Hokies opened up the scoring in the 16th minute when it was Candace Cephers connecting for the game's first goal off a corner kick. Murielle Tiernan made it 2-0 in the 24th minute on a free kick that made it difficult for the Orange to answer. After the goal from Skilton in the 44th minute, the Orange was only down by a goal headed into the half.
Virginia Tech got the scoring going quickly in the second half as Ashley Meier found the back of the net in the 48th minute after an Orange turnover inside the box. Syracuse was denied offensively for the remainder of the contest, losing to the Hokies 3-1.
"We put Virginia Tech on their heels with some dynamic attacking play, but it was not consistent enough to get the result we wanted," Wheddon said. "After going up against three top 10 teams in the past week, we feel strong that we can compete with anyone."
Syracuse will have a week off before returning home for its next ACC contest against Louisville on Sunday, Oct. 4 at noon. Live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
