Syracuse hosts Rhode Island in season opener on Nov. 11
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 2016-17 season is officially underway for the Syracuse University women's basketball program. Syracuse held its first official practice on Sunday morning at the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center.
"It's great," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "When you get to this day and you have your full roster, you're healthy, that's the most important thing for us. That's where we are. We are healthy. We are excited about the season."
The Orange are coming off the best season in program history. Syracuse won a program-record 30 games en route to its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament final. The team was ranked third nationally in the final coaches' poll, its highest ranking in its history.
Four starters return from the record-setting 2015-16 squad, led by guards Alexis Peterson and Brittney Sykes. Peterson is a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, while Sykes was the Orange's lone representative on the 2016 All-Final Four Team.
"We have elite guards," commented Hillsman. "I think we have one of the best backcourts in the country. Anytime you can have guards that can control the game and make plays, you feel good about that."
Fans can get their first glimpse of the 2016-17 team on Friday, Oct. 21 at Preferred Mutual Orange Madness. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Tickets are available for purchase online or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office.
