Gorelina, Lukacs tally double-doubles
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A strong Syracuse third set wasn't enough on Friday night in the Women's Building, as the Orange volleyball team lost in four sets (25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22) to Pittsburgh.
Syracuse is now 7-20 on the season and 6-11 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Panthers advanced to 21-8 on the season and 12-5 in the ACC.
"I think we just got beat by a team who played better tonight than we did," head coach Leonid Yelin said. "It doesn't mean we didn't play well… they just played better. We played well in the first game, but it wasn't enough because in the end, they pushed a little more."
Sophomore Anastasiya Gorelina and freshman Kendra Lukacs led the effort for the Orange in the last home Friday night game, as the pair each tallied a double-double. Gorelina had 11 kills and 12 digs, while Lukacs added 10 kills and 14 digs.
Junior Belle Sand added 20 digs for the Orange from the back court, while sophomore Jalissa Trotter had 15.
Syracuse out-blocked Pitt, 13.0-8.0, as junior Leah Levert led the effort at the net with seven assisted stops and a solo block on the night.
Sets one, three and four were decided by no more than three points apiece, while the difference in set two was six points.
Syracuse came out in the first set with momentum to tally a 7-2 run and force the early Pitt timeout.
The Panthers evened the score at eight, and the game remained within two points or less until Pitt came out on top, 25-23.
The Orange lost their stride at the end of the second set as Pitt tallied a 6-0 run to halt 'Cuse at 19 points and win set two, 25-19.
Set three unveiled a ray of hope for Syracuse. The Orange claimed the lead after the game was tied, 4-4, and never looked back, coming out on top of set three, 25-22.
The Orange trailed the Panthers early in the fourth set, 10-6, and called a timeout.
'Cuse built its momentum back up and tied the game at 15, but the Panthers remained strong and closed out set two, 25-22, and the game, 3-1.
Syracuse returns to the Women's Building on Sunday for its last home game of the season against Virginia Tech. The first serve is set for 1 p.m.
