Trio of double-doubles for Orange players
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Jalissa Trotter surpassed the 20-dig benchmark for the first time in her career, but the Syracuse volleyball team dropped the home finale to Virginia Tech in four sets (21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 27-25) on Sunday afternoon at the Women's Building.
Syracuse is now 7-21 overall and 6-12 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Hokies advanced to 12-17 overall and 7-11 in conference play.
Trotter tallied a game-leading 27 digs, paired with 39 assists for her fourth consecutive and 16th-career double-double.
The freshman pair of Kendra Lukacs and Mackenzie Weaver completed the trio of double-doubles, as Lukacs tallied 10 kills and 12 digs, while Weaver had 13 kills and 16 assists.
Polina Prokudina led the attack for the Orange with a career-high 16 kills, the second time that the freshman has completed double-digit attacking numbers.
Junior Leah Levert was the fourth Orange player to tally double-digit kill figures, as the middle blocker had 11. Levert was error-free, and finished with a .733 hitting percentage on the game.
The Orange started the game with momentum, winning the first set 25-21.
Keeping the game close, the pair fought back-and-forth through the next three consecutive sets, but Virginia Tech claimed the 3-1 come-from-behind win over Syracuse.
"I think overall we are kind of repeating our errors again and again," head coach Leonid Yelin said. "We have trouble staying in play consistently. I would say we are not giving consistent effort or enough effort to win."
The Orange close out the 2016 slate on the road this week at Louisville and Notre Dame. 'Cuse takes on the Cardinals in a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday and then closes out the year with the Fighting Irish on Friday at 1 p.m.
