Syracuse averages 16.7 more shots than opposition
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – For the ninth straight season, the Syracuse University women's basketball team has won 17 games as the Orange recorded an 83-62 victory against Clemson on Feb. 4 in the Carrier Dome. The team used the same formula against the Tigers that they have employed all season, getting more opportunities.
Â
"I thought our pressure was pretty good," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "We forced 33 turnovers, got 18 steals, and made some shots in transition. That was the key. I thought we did a pretty good job. We got 28 more shots."
Â
Syracuse is not the most efficient team from the field this year, but is able to compensate with its ability to force turnovers and collect offensive rebounds. Thanks to 33 forced turnovers and 23 offensive boards against Clemson, the Orange was able to pick up 28 more shots than its opposition.
Â
Getting more chances has been the squad's bread and butter this season. On average, Syracuse gets 16.7 more shots than its opponents through 23 games this season. Without a doubt, the Orange have been able to overcome its weaknesses by using its strengths, notching 17 victories for the ninth time under Hillsman.
Â
"For us, we are very happy with where we are," concluded Hillsman. "We keep winning basketball games. We have done a good job of playing the way we want to play, playing fast."
Â
The Orange will host its annual Celebration of Women Day on Sunday afternoon when the team takes on Georgia Tech. Anyone wearing pink, girl scouts, or clients of local women's businesses can receive a $5 ticket to the game. In addition, pink wristbands and cutouts of Hillsman's head on a stick will be given away.
Â
Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX, or by visiting the Carrier Dome box office (Gate B) during normal business hours.
