CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Syracuse softball team began ACC play in doubleheader action at North Carolina, picking up an 8-2 comeback win in the first game while falling 3-1 in the second.
Â
Tied 2-2 in the first game after seven innings, a three-run homer by junior Sydney O'Hara in the top of the eighth gave the Orange its first lead of the game, 5-2, and eventually set Syracuse up for an eight-run victory.
Â
Down 2-0 after a two-run Carolina home run in the bottom of the fourth, four hits in a row in the first four at bats in the top of the sixth sent junior Alyssa Dewes and sophomore Sammy Fernandez to home plate, knotting the game up heading into the final inning and a half of regular play.
Â
A lead-off double to center field by Dewes and a consecutive double to right center by Fernandez in the next at bat welcomed Dewes to home plate, making it 1-0. Sophomore Maddi Doane drew a base hit to left center following Fernandez's RBI double, placing Fernandez at third base with no outs. Senior Corinne Ozanne then sent one to center field, bringing Fernandez home to make it 2-2.
Â
The score remained 2-2 after seven innings, as the Orange allowed just one more Carolina hit in the bottom of the sixth. 'Cuse lit a fire in the top of the eighth, racking up six runs off of four hits to diminish the chances for the Tar Heels to mount a comeback.
Â
Doane started things off with a lead-off double to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch, while Ozanne reached first on a walk in the next at bat. With O'Hara up next at the plate, the junior sent one past the center field fence for her third home run of the season, reeling in three RBI to make it a 5-2 advantage for the Orange.
Â
In the next two at bats, senior Danielle Chitkowski and freshman Hannah Dossett got on base off of a single to the shortstop and a sacrifice bunt, respectively. With freshman Alicia Hansen at the plate next, a throwing error by the Tar Heel first baseman sent Chitkowski to home plate, giving the Orange a 6-2 advantage with no outs.
Â
Syracuse continued to rack up the runs, as a sacrifice fly to left field by Dewes welcomed Dossett home, 7-2. Doane registered her second hit of the inning with an RBI single through the right side, sending Hansen to home plate to finalize an 8-2 victory for the Orange.
Â
Doane tallied three hits off of four at bats, including one double. Fernandez and Dewes also added doubles in the win, while O'Hara added the three-run home run to lift the Orange past the Tar Heels. O'Hara also earned the win in the circle, marking her first win of the season. She recorded four strikeouts while pitching the final four innings, allowing no runs and three hits.
Â
GAME 2
The Tar Heels struck first in the bottom of the third, as two batters found themselves in scoring position off of a fielding error and a single up the middle. The two runners advanced to third base and home plate after a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly in the next at bat put two runs on the board.
Â
Carolina tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fourth off of a double to left field and a single up the middle, placing them at a 3-0 advantage.
Â
Pinch hitter Danielle Chitkowski jacked one over the center field fence to lead things off for 'Cuse in the top of the sixth, but it was too little too late, as the Tar Heels proceeded to hold the Orange hitless in the top of the seventh, sealing a 3-1 victory for the home team.
Â
Chitkowski's home run was her first of the season and the 16th of her career. Maddi Doane was responsible for the other Orange hit in the latter game, as a base hit to the shortstop came for her in the top of the first.
Â
Sophomore pitcher AnnaMarie Gatti tallied five strikeouts, one walk, and allowed five hits in the loss.
Â
The Orange and the Tar Heels face off in the series final tomorrow, Mar. 13, with the game being moved up an hour from 1 p.m. to a noon start.
